Bar Cart Carnage

Welp, we did it. The Boy and I signed both our names onto a singular lease. Oh-em-gee. It's on.

We get the keys at the end of this month and my goal before then is to find us the perfect bar cart. I really don't drink too much hard alcohol at all (I'll order a cocktail here and there but I'm a diehard Beer & Wine Girl), so this isn't so I have easy access to tons of booze.

Rather, this idea is for two reasons:

1) They seem so sophisticated, no? The vibe of Mad Men, Frank Sinatra, James Bond, Audrey Hepburn- these are the [delusional] ambiances I imagine our place transpiring with the addition of a measly bar cart.

2) I would LOVE to always be able to offer guests a nice drink before we go out. Scotch on the rocks? Comin' up. Vodka Cranberry? You got it. Welcome to my home, put your feet up and enjoy! Let's get weird on mi casa's dime.

The problem is that I have a pretty good idea in my head of what I want: monochrome coloring with hints of silver and/or mirrors OR a cart that's a stand-out color for emphasis. But so far, the ones I find that suit that are upwards of 700 bones.

No, no, no and no. 50 bucks is my desired price range for this task (meaning just the cart itself) and that will likely lead me to thrift stores with some DIY'ing involved.

So the search is on for the perfect-for-us bar cart. I don't mind putting elbow grease into it (just like the good daughter of a handy Dad should) but I'm hoping I can find a piece I can work with to get the desired outcome.

So readers- tips? Ideas? Do you have a bar cart? How'd you do it??? SPILL THE BEANS.

PS- Unlike me, The Boy does enjoy his hard booze... so, I'm also thinking of incorporating an auto-lock feature so after 1 AM when he's already feelin' good, he won't run it dry as he rocks out to Jordin Sparks and watches the Food Network in his boxers (sorry babes, secret's out). I'm a genius.

*Know where the post-title derives from?? Love you forever if you do!

  1. I didn't even know that they were called bar cart, I thought they were just trays...& OMG, congrats again on, well signing the lease. YAY! I am sure you can find one in your budget, & deff Caitlin-ness it. I wonder if Ikea has something like this, or even Target. & agree it does scream sophisticated, & very grown up-ish. & lol, Jordin Sparks, really? Cute! Happy belated birthday to your brother! & I feel old, but I am totally looking forward to being 25 this year. Yay Leos!

  4. This is such a good idea, sadly I don't have one of these.. but I really want one now! I find the best addition to our home has been lots and lots of framed prints on the walls.. it makes the place so much more personal and homely, and is always a talking point

Also, scented candles and a god send for those 'come into my home, we are perfect' moments, and we keep a bowl of sweets on the side so people can help themselves to that too xx

  5. Congratulations! Such an exciting step!! Not sure on the bar cart. I've seen a few on craigslist when searching for a wine rack. Maybe try Craigslist too?

  8. Congrats on signing!! woohooo!
I actually bought my husband a bar for Christmas... though I really liked the idea of a bar cart, I figured that having something I could close would be nice if I'm entertaining with kids or non-drinkers present. But I love the auto-lock idea! It certainly would have helped us to avoid drinking that extra bottle of wine on occasion. :)

  10. Ohmigosh Caitlin you are a genius! I have never before thought of a bar cart, but oh...I want one now. Wouldn't you feel just like Daisy Buchanan pushing one up to a guest and say, "Care for a sidecar?" Though, of course, people don't really drink sidecars nowadays (at least I don't think they do), but it sounds charming! :P

P.S. Congratulations! I'm so excited for you and The Boy! :)

  12. Congrats, congrats! I have no idea how to fix the bar cart situation, though. DIY? Maybe buy mini mirrors or tiny tiling and glue them onto an atrocity?

  15. Congrats on the new direction Miss Caitlin. You got me with the title; don't know. I do think the boy may have to start censoring your blog if you continue to talk about his underwear singing and Jordin Sparks routine.

  16. congrats on signing the lease! My boyfriend and I just moved into a new place a week and a half ago and so far I LOVE it! It's so much nicer to always be together than worry about packing a bag, commuting, having to go home to get stuff, ect. I love our little space! We dropped a huge bill at Ikea this weekend getting stuff to help organize!

  17. I'm still on the hunt! I'm seriously considering scouting for tv trays instead and doing a major overhaul. Thift stores have been no good for me on this one, phooey!

  18. I TOTALLY want one too and we've been looking for awhile now. They are super expensive, but if you're willing to thrift like you said, you should be able to find one! Try online, too!

  21. I LOVE bar carts!! couldn't agree more with all the pros you listed about owning one, they are seriously chic! i was on the hunt for one before leaving our apartment... but im scared to buy one cos we usually have way too much bar "things" to stay on such a tiny little cart lol but anyways.. GET ONE!!! its super cute and totally gonna be useful since the boy drinks! aaaaaaaand you can totally offer it to me when i come over :P lol

  22. so so exciting caitlin! i'm happy for you and the boy, and i'm looking forward to hearing how your bar cart project turns out. i've always wanted one too. i had a pretty sizable amount of booze at my parent's house, that sadly didn't make it out to CA, haha, so i have to rebuild! have you seen emily's bar cart (from cupcakesandcashmere)? it's really vintage looking and cute the way she set hers up.

  23. I live for bar carts and/trays. Idk why this is, but I do. And I totally picture what you're saying, bc I want that exact type too with some Mad Men swagger. Most of my friends drink beer (I'm a liquor gal) but that doesn't matter bc I want a cart. Right now everything is in a bar cabinet. Not cute.

  24. I'm more of a hard liquor girl, but I love t have one of these in mine and hubby's home. Be sure to blog about it if you DIY!

  25. I'm also on this hunt! It's not a priority purchase for us right now, so I'm hoping the summer markets will bring one out of hiding :)

PS ~ congrats on this big next step!
